{low down, throw down with Daniel Krieger}

It's not often that we get to have a guy on the blog, so this is an exciting day! We have, for your viewing and reading pleasure, NYC photographer Daniel Krieger throwing down with us today! He's funny, he's talented and his pictures are super cool...

Name: Daniel Krieger
Business: Daniel Krieger Photography
Website/Blog:

Tell us one sentence to describe your photography:

I try to connect with my subjects and share the experience with them while creating a photograph.

What's one thing that everyone should know about you?

I consider my sense of humor one of my greatest assets.

How long have you been doing photography and how did you get started?

I've been doing photography professionally for about the past 4 years. I started by taking my Nikon D70 out to lunch at my day job everyday, taking photos on the streets of NYC, trying to develop a style. People started hiring me for jobs here and there and it grew from that.

If they made a movie about your life, what would it be titled and who would play you?

Getting High on ISO, the story of Daniel Krieger Photography. No that's stupid I don't know what the movie would be called. Seth Rogen would probably have to play me.

What is your best post processing tip?

Get the best image possible to start with, so you don't have to over process.

What is your best tip for getting great lighting in photos?

Study the way light hits things and how it comes across in your images. When inside watch for different color temperatures.. if there's sun light mixing with artificial lighting things sometimes look funky. Natural light is always the best.

What does beautiful mean to you?

Catching that moment of clarity or true emotion from a subject is beautiful.

If you could photograph anyone living or not, who would it be and why?

I always wanted to photograph Woody Allen. I grew up watching his films and admired his creativity and humor and love of New York City. He has an intensity in the photos I've seen of him that just transfer well into pictures.

Explain to us your dream vacation?

Traveling around Africa for a few months photographing people, landscapes, animals.

What type of sessions are your favorite (children, newborns, weddings, senior, other....) and why?

I really enjoy photographing weddings and doing portraits for editorial assignments. I like meeting interesting people and hanging out with them, photographing them in their workplace and experiencing what their lives are like even if its for a short time.

What equipment do you use and if you had only one lens to use...what would it be?

I use Nikon DSLRS and a bevy of lenses. I also use a Holga and a Hasselblad. My favorite lens is the 85mm 1.4 Nikon. It's a great piece of glass.

What is your most embarrassing moment?

Probably the stretch of my college years when I used to wear mickey mouse night shirts to class with corduroy pants.
And I used to wonder why I didn't have a girlfriend.

If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice when you were starting out in photography, what would it be?

I would have myself start at an earlier age in photography. I'm very happy where I am now but I've only been in the game a few years now.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Running a studio with other photographers shooting for me. I think I make a good, fair boss and I have an eye for up-and-coming talented photographers when I see them.

What song inspires you? You know, the one that can lift your spirits no matter what?

Blinded by the Light - ELO

What is the all time best book you've ever read?

On The Road

If we surprised you at your house today, what would be the first thing we would notice?

The two best cats in the world and my new sweet couch and my lovely girlfriend.

What are your top tips for great marketing and getting your name out there?

Giving your card out to everyone you meet, and having a good card that people say "hey nice card!" Checking in with contacts and knocking on doors. If you want to make a living in photography you gotta be a hustler. I'm very happy where I am right now but watching extremely successful people I always notice how hard they work and how they rarely take breaks from the hustle.

Who is the first photographer that comes to mind and why?

Thomas Hawk. His dedication to his goals are inspiring. He is always out there shooting every single day. There are photographers who's actual work I enjoy viewing more but he's definitely one of my favorite photographers.

And lastly.....when we started the maternal lens, all of us filled out this questionnaire and shared our answers....now it's your turn :)

What is your favorite word? achieve
What is your least favorite word? meta (its annoying to me when people say things are "meta")
What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally? people who are passionate about things.
What turns you off creatively, spiritually or emotionally? being told you can't take photos somewhere always sucks.
What sound or noise do you love? the shutter of my Hasselblad.
What sound or noise do you hate? when people lay on their car horn in traffic.
What is your favorite thing to say when you get mad? probably the F word.
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Movie Director.
What profession would you not like to do? manual labor ain't my thing..so anything that falls into that category.
If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? I'd love if God high fived me and we immediately went golfing at Augusta and smoked really good cuban cigars.. That would be cool.

Thanks for playing, Daniel! It was a pleasure to have you on TML!!

{low down, throw down with Sharon De La O}

I am so pleased that I get to introduce the next photographer for our low down throw down! When I stumbled upon her blog not that long ago, I was intrigued that I had found someone that mirrored myself in many ways. It's not every day that you find a photographer that is also a certified sign language interpreter! Sharon and I's love for photography, and the way Deafness is intertwined through our lives made us fast friends. Sharon's husband is Deaf, as is my soon to be adopted daughter. AND--I haven't even mentioned how sweet she is and how incredibly talented! I adore Sharon's work and the lady behind it. I hope that our families can meet one day!

Without further ado, I present the fabulous Sharon De La O.

Tell us one sentence to describe your photography:

Passionate, timeless and true.

What's one thing that everyone should know about you?:

I am an open book and wear my heart on my sleeve. I tell it like it is, the good the bad and the ugly! This is the only way I know how to be and I actually love that quality about myself. It also transcends into my photography.

5005190091_5f96186f3f_b

How long have you been doing photography and how did you get started:

Wheww, this is gonna be long.. I have been doing photography for around 13 years. I took photography in high school, that is definitely when I first fell in love. My dad gave me the Minolta he used in college. I STILL use that camera with the original 55mm f 1.7 lens. LOVED developing my own photos and watching them come to life, it was magical. I went to college at California State University Northridge and majored in Deaf Studies. I continued to take photography classes while studying to become a sign language interpreter. After graduating, I was a full time interpreter and my photography hobby was placed on the back burner. Fast forward a few years...I met my future husband, Darrick, who happens to be Deaf . When our son, Taj, was an infant we took him to one of those cookie cutter photography studios. I was disgusted and the result. It was then I decided to buy my first DSLR to document the precious moments with my children, my own way. I was overwhelmed with friends asking me to shoot their kids, their families, their bellies and such. I LOVED it! While interpreting part time I also pursued my passion, photography, on the side. This summer I was laid off of my interpreting job. I experienced every emotion possible all at once from devastated to ecstatic and hopeful. I knew this was what was meant to happen and I was ready to dive into my photography full force. SO thats where I am now, 4 months later, straight hustling and loving every minute of it.

5099108412_7f25ba84ef_b

If they made a movie about your life, what would it be titled and who would play you?

It would be called, Incredibly Loud Silence. This says so much about me and my life. I would love if Natalie Portman played me, she does passionate and goofy characters really well. ;)

What is your best post processing tip?:

I am sure everyone has said similar, less is definitely more. Over processed images make my eyes hurt. Get it right in your camera and your life will be much easier. I do almost all of my post processing in adobe camera raw. I like to let the emotion from the moment captured shine without covering it up with too much editing.

5098465169_86293a2253_b

What is your best tip for getting great lighting in photos?

This is a tough one for me to explain. My eyes somehow are trained to SEE the light. Does that sound crazy? Where it is bouncing and landing.. I can see where the rays are coming from and I position my clients accordingly. If something isn't working I keep moving until the light is perfect. I am such a natural light junky, seriously, it's like a high for me.

What does beautiful mean to you?:

Beauty shines from within. Beauty is reality. Beauty is when love looks like art. Beauty is the look in someones eyes that tells a story of where they have been.

5076851144_f6642ec7bb_b

Explain to us your dream vacation?:

My hubb and I never went on a honeymoon, tragic right? I would LOVE to go to Italy with him someday. Vino, gelato, pizza, romance and photography. ( not in that order necessarily) Sounds like pure bliss to me.

What type of sessions are your favorite (children, family, newborns....) and why?:

That is a toughy... I am really feeling my engagement sessions right now. I love feeling the passion between these couples and I am able to somehow to pull it out of them and make them feel 100% comfortable with being real in front of my lens. I was a second shooter for a wedding recently and LOVED it! Wedding photography is definitely the direction I am headed. I loved the emotion coupled with tension and passion throughout the whole day. It was exhausting and inspiring all the way around. I booked my first wedding in January and am thrilled beyond words that this amazing couple has picked me document their special day. (on a side note, if any photographers in my area are looking for a second shooter or assistant, hit me up! I would love to get some more weddings under my belt before january...)

5027562812_1bd9080e9a_b

What equipment do you use and if you had only one lens to use...what would it be?:

I shoot with a Nikon D700 and mainly my 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.4. I do have zooms, but they are collecting dust. It is sooo hard to choose between those two lenses, but I would have to say my 85. That thing is so sharp and the bokeh is super yummy! I rent other lenses (such as the 70-200 f2.8) if needed for gigs. My budget just doesn't allow for more than that at this time.

What is your most embarrassing moment?

A recent one comes to mind...I went through a whole shoot with this super sweet family, got in my car and looked at myself in the mirror, I had toothpaste all over my mouth! How did that happen? ughhh so embarrassing, but I still laugh thinking about it.

62519_154818264542313_120442457979894_389053_1735738_n

As a mom and photographer, how do you balance your life?:

Working on it! As for now I am one exhausted mommy photographer. I have two amazing kiddos, Taj (3 1/2) and Lani (1 1/2) and they keep me on my toes running around like a crazy woman all day. I shoot mainly at dusk and I don't edit until they are fast asleep. I really need to work on balancing my laundry pile. I can't quite seem to ever really get on top of that.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?:

I see myself with a solid photography career. Owning an RV and taking it up the coast stopping at each beach to surf with my hubby and kids.

What song inspires you? You know the one that can lift your spirits no matter what:

"Everything is Everything" by Lauren Hill

5099048360_247d5d2d30_b

What is the all time best book you've ever read?

This is going to be embarrassing, but I gotta be honest. LOVED the Twilight saga. Trendy and awesome. Made me feel like a love sick high schooler. LOVED every page!

If we surprised you at your house today, what would be the first thing we would notice?

Pictures pictures everywhere! You would probably also notice it is pretty loud even though american sign language is the first language used in my home.

5099048410_e2255beb83_b

And lastly.....when we started the maternal lens, all of us filled out this questionnaire and shared our answers....now it's your turn :)

What is your favorite word? sweet!
What is your least favorite word? booger. I hear it all day long.
What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally? love
What turns you off creatively, spiritually or emotionally? fakeness
What sound or noise do you love? my babies belly laughing together
What sound or noise do you hate? Any noise loud enough to wake my kids while napping! ha
What is your favorite thing to say when you get mad? Ask my husband haha
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Singing
What profession would you not like to do? ummm, construction?
If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? You done good, kid. I need to update my portfolio, you do headshots? Remember when you got laid off? I did that.

It's a GIVEAWAY! Pure Photoshop Actions

We have a treat for you today! Not just one, but two prizes are up for grabs...fabulous Pure Photoshop Actions!

One lucky winner will receive the Pure Action Set 1 (a $50 value) and a second lucky winner will receive Everything Pure, which includes ALL the actions from the Pure Actions website ($100 value!)

Here's a little bit of the Pure Action philosophy...

At Pure Actions we believe in showcasing the work of the photographer, rather than stifling it with overly heavy actions. Our actions are light and refreshing and bring out the best in your image.

Our first set it an excellent production set. Pure Action Set 1
It helps you get your image to a perfect, clean edit with helps for exposure and white balance, then you can build on that perfect foundation with color pops, haze actions and black and whites. Once you've used Set 1, you'll have a beautiful image with a gentle style.

Want to go even further? Try Pure Season! They are gentle color washes with seasonal influences. They can bring out warmth and fun in your image and take them to a more artistic place.

We also have our favorite "one-click wonder", our Cross-Process action.
It is gentle and beautifying, without heavy color casts that usually characterize cross-process actions.

With this whole set, you can fix simple issues, and enhance the innate beauty of your photography. Pure Actions allow YOUR image to shine through!

We also leave all of the layers open so that you are in total control of your images.

The actions are BOTH Elements and Photoshop compatible, with the exception of the Cross-Process which only works in Photoshop.

We didn't make these actions to be heavy actions. They are simply a reflection of our workflow, so they are naturally gentle and subtle. You can run actions more then once to get a stronger effect if that is what you feel your picture calls for.

Entering is easy!

Check out the Pure action sets and tell us what kinds of actions you are most interested in by leaving a comment here on the blog.

For an additional entry, become a fan of Pure Actions on facebook! Leave us a second comment to let us know you are a fan!

{low down, throw down with Krissy Allori}

We have a treat for you today! Krissy's work is crisp, clean and refreshing and we are so excited to be featuring her today!
Thanks Krissy!

Name: Krissy Allori

Business name: Krissy Allori Photography

Location: Portland, Oregon

Website/blog: www.krissyallori.com

www.krissyallori.com/blog

Tell us one sentence to describe your photography:

My photography tells a story through personality and connection.

What's one thing that everyone should know about you?

That I’m offering a BIG wedding promo and am still looking for two couples! For my promo, I’m offering half off any of my wedding collections and one of the five lucky couples will win their photography for FREE! Looking for couples in Portland (preferred) as well as Southern California, Seattle and San Francisco. Promo details can be seen here: http://krissyallori.com/wedding_promo.pdf.

How long have you been doing photography and how did you get started?

I’ve been doing photography for a couple years now. I got started because I wanted to be able to take better pictures of my kids. I found a couple online photography forums and soaked up as much information as I could every single day. I learned how to shoot in manual, understand light, composition and post processing. It immediately became not only a passion, but an obsession, and I love it just as much today as I did the very first time I got my first “wow” photo.

If they made a movie about your life, what would it be titled and who would play you?

This was a tough one to answer. I’ve probably thought more about this question than any of the others! First of all, there would never be a movie about my life because I’m really not that interesting, but if there was, it would be called “lucky girl”. Every time I get a new piece of photography equipment, my husband says “lucky girl”, and I really am. I have a wonderful family, there isn’t a word to describe how incredible my kids are, I love where I live, and I’m so fortunate to have found photography. There are two actresses that I would recommend to play me. The main reason for the two is because they are the only actresses I’ve ever been told I look like: Sarah Michelle Gellar or Sarah Chalke (she played Elliot on Scrubs).

What is your best post processing tip?

Stay organized and get a solid work flow down.

What is your best tip for getting great lighting in photos?

I adore backlight. The best way that I achieve gorgeous backlight is to position my subject with their back to the light. I try to get nice rim lighting around them without any bright spots on their skin. The sun has to be reasonably low in the sky and often works best if the light is being filtered by some trees, especially if the sun is in the shot. Lastly, I try to have something dark behind my subject (a building, greenery, etc.) – if its open sky, you often lose that amazing glow.

What does beautiful mean to you?

To me, beautiful means connection. Beauty is more than what you see, its what you feel. That is what I try to capture with my photography, and being able to grab hold of that connection is what makes my clients feel beautiful.

If you could photograph anyone living or not, who would it be and why?

My grandmother. I would have loved to have had really nice photos of her to give to my grandpa, my mom, and for my kids to see since they never got to meet her.

Explain to us your dream vacation?

My dream vacation would take place in a gorgeous home in Hawaii on a private beach. The vacation would last at least three months. Different groups of friends and family would come visit us a week at a time, with a couple days to ourselves in between visitors. We would eat tons of delicious food and not put on a single pound. We would never run out of money. We’d spend all day out in the sun, playing in the sand, swimming, scuba diving, and the kids would actually take a nap every day (this is, after all, my dream vacation, right?). And at the end of the vacation I would have so many awesome photos that I would have to make a different album for each week.

What type of sessions are your favorite (children, newborns, weddings, senior....) and why?

Families because:

Variety - You can get so many different photos with a family; all together, mom & dad alone, individual shots, mom with kids, dad with kids, you get the picture. I thrive on variety.

Connection - There are few things better in photography than getting that shot where you can just feel the love.

It's personal - I've always wanted a good family photo of my own family. Well, before I got into photography, I dreamed of having just one good family photo and it was so hard to get. I just assume everyone else feels the same way I do, so I try my best to get as many jaw dropping gorgeous photos as I can with every session that would each be worthy of a HUGE canvas.

Seniors because:

They're fun.

They actually look at the camera and follow direction (unlike kids under 3.)

Every kid that age needs to feel beautiful.

Weddings because:

I love to tell a story with my photography and what better story is there than someone's wedding?

I just love weddings. The excitement, the dress, the details, the planning, the family, and of course, the food.

I know and understand that a couple's wedding is a day they will forever cherish and I love being able to provide a service that will provide memories for the rest of their lives.

What equipment do you use and if you had only one lens to use...what would it be?

I shoot with a Nikon D700. At the moment I only have two lenses (both Nikon): 105mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.4. I almost always use the 105mm macro. The only time I use the 50mm is when space is tight. If I only had one lens to use I’m guessing it would be the 24-70mm f/2.8 (even though I don’t have it) because its just a good all around lens (so I’ve heard). I just got the go ahead from the hubby last night to get the 24mm f/1.4. I cannot wait to start shooting with a wide angle prime! Now I just need to convince him to let me buy the 70-200mm f/2.8 because that’s next on my list.

What is your most embarrassing moment?

Like I would publish that on the internet. :)

If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice when you were starting out in photography, what would it be?

Don’t go prop crazy because you’ll get sick of each prop after you’ve used it only once.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Still in Portland, watching my kids grow, and hopefully running a very successful photography business.

What song inspires you? You know, the one that can lift your spirits no matter what?

Not sure why but the first song that popped into my head was “Solsbury Hill” by Peter Gabriel. No reason why, but I can’t hear it without turning the music up real loud.

What is the all time best book you've ever read?

We’re Going On A Bear Hunt. My three year old had it memorized and watching her recite the entire story with that animated little face of hers may end up being one of my all time favorite memories.

If we surprised you at your house today, what would be the first thing we would notice?

Toys on the floor.

What are your top tips for great marketing and getting your name out there?

1. When you’re building your business, stay busy. If you don’t having paying clients knocking down your door, take some photos of some friends and post regularly on your blog.

2. Word of mouth is your best friend.

3. Facebook is your next best friend.

4. Work on your SEO. Optimize your splash page. Comment frequently on other blogs and always leave your web address. I have no idea what I did to get there, but I’m on page 1 if you do a google search for “Portland family photographer” or “Portland high school senior photographer.”

Who is the first photographer that comes to mind and why?

Lisa Lucky. From the first moment I saw her photos, I was in love. I adore her processing, the way she uses light, her perspective – everything. I would like to think my style is similar because she has been such an inspiration to me, but I would never go so far as to make the comparison. I bow down to her! :)

And lastly.....when we started The Maternal Lens, all of us filled out this questionnaire and shared our answers....now it's your turn :)

What is your favorite word? love

What is your least favorite word? I honestly can’t think of one.

What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally? My kids

What turns you off creatively, spiritually or emotionally? Creatively, one bad experience or session will leave me feeling like a failure.

What sound or noise do you love? I love to listen to my kids play when they don’t know I’m listening.

What sound or noise do you hate? Long electric guitar solos.

What is your favorite thing to say when you get mad? Its probably not appropriate to say.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Filthy rich lottery winning stay-at-home soccer mom.

What profession would you not like to do? Mover. I think having to pack up your own stuff and move to another house is the worst… I can’t imagine doing it for other people every single day.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? “Welcome! It’s the year 2088. You’ve lived an amazing 110 years.”
